The PNC Milwaukee Marathon (formerly the Milwaukee Running Festival) is sponsored by PNC Bank and directed by Chris Ponteri. Founded in 2015, the Milwaukee Marathon hosts a 26.2 miles (42.2 km) main event, 1-mile, 5K, 10K, half marathon and full marathon courses. Runners of all ages and abilities can participate.
The race begins on South 2nd St & West Freshwater Way in Milwaukee and makes its way towards the lakefront of Lake Michigan while passing the Milwaukee Art Museum, Veterans Park, Summerfest Grounds, Miller Park and the Journey House Green Bay Packer practice field. The finish line is near the Harley Davidson Museum at Reed Street Yards. The 27th Mile Post-Race Party is the official after-event for runners, spectators and volunteers.
A Boston Marathon qualifying race, the very first Milwaukee Marathon attracted about 3,700 runners, of which the following year increased to more than 4,000 participants. Dozens of charities, including the American Cancer Society, Make-A-Wish, and the National Multiple Sclerosis Society are official sponsors.
In 2015, David Tuwei & Pauline Mutwa set course records for the PNC Milwaukee Marathon.
In 2016, U.S. Olympics hopeful and South Milwaukee native, Lauren Kleppin, handed out medals to kids & supported the runners of the marathon.
In 2017, the mile race was held on October 14th while the 5k, 10K , Half Marathon & Full Marathon were on October 15th. However, the marathon course had been mismeasured, and was 0.8 miles (1.3 km) too short.
